According to ChatGPT, empathy is....

“Empathy is the ability to understand and share the feelings, emotions, and perspectives of others. It involves putting oneself in someone else's shoes, and imagining what it would feel like to experience what they are going through. Empathy is often described as an essential aspect of being human, as it allows us to connect with and care for others, and to form meaningful relationships. It is also an important skill in many professions, such as counseling, healthcare, and social work, as it helps people to better understand and support others.”

When I asked ChatGPT to define empathy, I was impressed by the clarity of the response. It highlighted several important elements: understanding another person's feelings, appreciating their perspective, and recognizing empathy as essential for relationships and helping professions.

Looking back, however, I notice what is missing.

The definition speaks about understanding and sharing feelings, but says little about demonstrating that understanding. It does not distinguish between cognitive, affective, and compassionate empathy. Nor does it address the role of listening, curiosity, emotional literacy, or the practice of communicating understanding in a way another person can actually receive.

In fairness, it was a good starting point. But empathy is more than a definition. It is a practice, a discipline, and a way of relating to ourselves and others.
