One of the common misunderstandings about empathy is that it requires us to tolerate harmful behavior. It does not. Empathy helps us understand another person's experience, but understanding is not the same as agreement, compliance, or self-sacrifice. Healthy empathy includes boundaries. We can care deeply about another person's feelings and needs while also caring for our own.
